Sustainable Development Goal 4

– Quality Education

This is a short three-module course were you, along with your class in English C, B, and A (HF, STX, and HTX), can dive into UN Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education. The aim is to make the sometimes abstract sustainable development goals more concrete and relatable.

Through these three parts of the teaching material, the students will achieve a deeper understanding of the nuances of formal and non-forma education and consider what is imortant to them in their own educational endevours. The students will also be inspired by stories of activism and initiatives from young people in Sierra Leone.

PART 1: INTRODUCTION IN THE CLASSROOM

Time: 90min / In the classroom

An overall introduction to Sustainable Development Goal 4 Quality Education, along with an introduction to an inspiring film about the inspiring journey of Isata and the power of non-formal education – overcoming obstacles to move closer to her dreams.

PART 2: Exploring Copenhagen

Time: 60min (eksklusive transport) / KVUC

In this part, learning is taken out of the classroom and into the city. Students board the M3 City Circle metro line and embark on a journey through the city of Copenhagen. Equipped with the Sustainable Development Goals Map (on the previous page) in hand and the orienteering app Woop (developed by the Danish Scouts) installed on their phones, the students are tasked with locating the M3 Kongens Nytorv Metro Station. Upon reaching street level, they open the Woop app and begin the ‘hunt’. During this trip, the students will experience and engage with different stories of quality education by students at KVUC.

Next, you will go on an exciting city walk exploring Sustainable Development Goal 4 and students’ stories from Copenhagen Adult Educational Center (KVUC) – a school that helps its students create new ways forward. Maybe some of your students will join a VUC after their high school to improve or level up subjects for their further education. This is a way for them to think about their further education and to experience a way to achieve their educational goals.

KVUC’s programs ensure an effective pathway within the education system for those who continue their education later in life for various reasons, need a fresh start, or face the evolving demands of the job market. They educate a diverse group of adults and young learners who have chosen to take the next step in their educational journey. KVUC aspires to be a learning environment that opens to the world, both to what is just around the corner and to the wider world. As expressed in a student speech at the graduation ceremony: “KVUC has paved a new path for us. Each one of us sitting here is living proof that understanding, inclusivity, and flexibility are well-invested.”

When students arrive at the correct location at the M3 Kongens Nytorv Station, they will access the Woop app’s hunt through the map function and choose the Woop hunt – SDG 4 QUALITY EDUCATION. The students start the hunt and the instructions will become available to them.

If you wish to use the material without visiting KVUC, you can do so. As a teacher, you just need to place the tasks in the Woop App on your phone in the area you prefer instead. The hunt is designed to function effectively without students physically visiting KVUC, although this is, of course, the most enjoyable option. Scan the QR-code to place the tasks in Woop.

For teachers at KVUC: A hunt has been created starting from KVUC’s main entrance. Please use this instead.

Remember to inform the students in advance that they need to go through 12 checkpoints.

Scan the QR-codes to download the Woop app, and learn how to use it.

PART 3. FOLLOW-UP IN THE CLASSROOM

Time: 90min / In the classroom

Back in the classroom, the students will have the opportunity to design their own action plan for better quality education at your school, based on their learnings and considerations from Isata’s story and the student stories from KVUC.

Create a concrete action plan to promote Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education) at your school.

1. What are the challenges and available resources?

2. Describe your innovative ideas for creating meaningful change at your school.

3. Incorporate insights gained from Isata’s story and students’ experiences from the KVUC website.

4. Choose a creative medium (e.g., short film, artwork, poem, song) to present your action plan.

5. Include a concise one-page explanation in English, highlighting key messages from your plan.

Submit your action plan to your school leaders for consideration.

Work in groups of up to four students.

Allocate 40 minutes for this activity.

Teachers notes:

It is important that the students can get acknowledgment and/or feedback on their action plans from the school leaders.

Arrange with the school administration, the student council, and/or other relevant organs at your school to give the students acknowledgment of their plans – either by planning a presentation for a representative of the school administration or the student council.

You are free to change the exercise according to your class level and needs.
